If you've been toying with the idea of upgrading from a basic cell phone to a smartphone that offers Internet capabilities, but would like to get one that's easy to see and less complicated to use, you're in luck.

There are several options on the market today that that provide simplified features for people that are unfamiliar or uncomfortable with technology.

GreatCall Touch3: Designed specifically for seniors with limited tech skills, the new Touch3 is an android phone made by Samsung. It has a 4-inch touchscreen and provides a simple menu list to often-used features like the phone, text messages, camera, pictures, email and Internet, along with your contacts and apps.

It also offers a variety of health and safety features like the 5Star app that lets you immediately speak to a certified agent 24/7 who can identify your location and get you the help you need. Urgent Care, which provides access to registered nurses and doctors for advice and diagnoses. And MedCoach, which sends medication reminders.

Available at greatcall.com or 800-918-8543, the Touch3 sells for $150 plus a one-time activation fee of $35, and no-contract is required.

Samsung Galaxy Easy Mode

Samsung Galaxy smartphones:
These popular mainstream phones (including the "S," "Note" and "Mega" series) can be great for seniors too because of their large 5.1, 5.7 and 6.3-inch screen sizes, and the built-in "Easy Mode" feature they offer. This feature, which is located in the phone's settings, will let you convert the phone into a much simpler mode of operation that provides larger, well labeled icons, to only commonly-used functions like the phone, camera, messaging, Internet, pictures, contacts and your favorite apps. Available through most cell phone carriers, the Samsung Galaxy smartphones typically range between $400 and $850 without a contract.

Huawei Ascend

Huawei Ascend Mate 2 & Vision 2: Available through Consumer Cellular, the Huawei simplified smartphones offer a more affordable option to seniors living on a budget.

Both phones – the Ascend Mate 2 which has a 6.1-inch touchscreen, and Vision 2 that has a 4-inch screen – offer a "Simple" mode feature that converts the phone user interface into big, well-labeled tabs to often used functions, which makes them easier to use. Sold through consumercellular.com (or 888-345-5509) for $100 or $250, with no contract, Consumer Cellular also offers discounts to AARP members.
